Bruce-
First of all, nice web site. Very informative.
I was recently in my grandmother's basement and noticed approximately
400-500 old canning jars. These include Kerr's and Ball jars. I took some of
the more interesting looking Ball jars to display around my house because I
know the history of Ball Corp being a graduate of Ball State Univ. Some of
the jars I took with
me have measurement guides on the sides of them. Anything you can tell me
about them? The jars are all shapes and sizes with measurements. I've
looked at several websites and haven't found anything out about the
measurements. Maybe because this is a common thing...I don't know. Let me
know when you get the chance.

Hello, I just stumbled across your website while trying to check on how old
some of my jars are. One in particular is a dark amethyst quart jar. It
doesn't have any markings. It is 6 1/2" tall. It has a slightly concave
bottom, several bubbles. I don't think it had a screw on lid because the
only threading is at the very top, just under the lip. Any ideas?
Also, a few years ago, I found a copy of a book that Frank Clayton Ball
evidently had privately published. The title of the book is MEMOIRS OF FRANK
CLAYTON BALL. It does not have a dust jacket. On the title page it reads:
Memoirs of Frank Clayton Ball with illustrations Privately printed Muncie,
Indiana 1937. It is in very good shape, but does show some wear due to it's
age. The previous owner signed the book in pencil on the inside front page.
There are lots of pictures and it is signed:
Christmas Greetings Frank C Ball 1937

I was looking at your site and one of the photos caught my eye in your
gallery...
"Ball IDEAL PAT'D JULY 14, 1908.
Rare (non dropped-a, added under score) ball blue quart.
This half wire bail, common dimple IDEAL jar shouldn't exist. This jar is
pictured on a Ball Blue Book from 1918 and possibly a few other years. A lot
of collectors thought that because it was pictured there, the jar would be
one readably obtainable but it was not to be. It was eventually assumed this
jar was a "ghost" jar and given life by artistic license. But here it is in
all of it's glory... I have only heard of one other example. The more common
variety seen of this jar has a full wire bail, which by the way is strange
too because the patent date is for the dimples... Go figure. "
Well My question is what is a ghost jar? and are they rare because I have 3
that look just like yours. I enlarged your photo and they are just the same
.......If you would like I could email you a photo of them. My husband and I
are bead artist's and we use them to store our bead stock. We have many
different size jars of mostly shades of blue clear and a purple one
.....they are not all ball though.
