Hi my name is Nina, and I was looking at your collection of Ball canning jars, and I came accross the one that says " Ball IDEAL PAT'D JULY 14, 1908.

Rare (non dropped-a, added under score) ball blue quart.

Could you be so kind to tell me if I have something rare? or if maybe it might be a reproduction of sorts.

Thank you for your time. Nina Taylor

Bruce--
After further searching, I've found that they are 1/3 pints, clear, Ball Perfect Mason embossed. The lids are zinc with porcelin inside with Ball embossed on the top. Also, in searching through another crate of jars, I have come across several error jars. When I get them cleaned up, I can send pictures if you would like to see them. I also found a "Decker's Iowana" Mason City, Iowa Pat. July 14, 1908. It is clear with a glass lid. There is a 5 embossed on the bottom. Any idea on a value of this one. I live near Mason City, IA, so may be of interest to some collectors here.
Thanks Denise

Thank you Bruce,

I had also posted my question on the Yahoo Group board & Bob Clay has emailed some info.

I got so excited when I saw I had a jar that looked just like yours. All of the other Ideal jars I have do
not have the underlined logo, and very few have 3 wire closures.

Oh well, everyone starts at the beginning :)

Hello! I like your site and have some questions for you. I have started a small collection of jars that I have been unable to find any information on. I have 3 jars that say ball sanitary sure seal pat July 14,08. Each one has a different number on the bottom such as 2,3, and 9 with a dot after the 9. I also have some that have a "hand drawn" 8 and 6 or 9 with a line underneath. They are all different and I think they are very old. Any information you can give me on what the numbers mean and how to tell which ones are valued, would be great. Thanks in advance, and keep up the great site.

Sincerely, Mike

Back in the 1980s I found these cool drinking mugs made by Ball (actually a mason jar with a handle made by Ball) and I loved them so much I bought several cases. Well....I only have a few left now as they have cracked and broken over the years....any idea where I can find them again? I love them, they are great! Thanks Terri

Hi Bruce,

I was looking at the jars you have on your site and came across your comments regarding this second jar...

Ball IDEAL - Very scarce variation with IDEAL in slug plate.

I am brand new at this hobby so I don't know what a slug plate is BUT I have a jar that looks exactly like yours! I picked it out of about a dozen jars that looked alike because it was the only one with a Ball underscore.

Can you tell me what it is that is not evident in the picture (your quote), and what is a slug plate?

Thanks so much, Michael

However, after purchasing them I find it very difficult to find the rubber rings I'll need to can. Any suggestions? I bought them because I like to give people homemade gift baskets around Christmas with different things I've made from the garden. Are these jars something I shouldn't part with? We're putting an addition on our house and while excavating we found, as expected, lots of bottles, jars, and other miscellaneous glassware. oddly we only found one "mason" jar. I expected mason jars to be somewhat prevalent since the house was built between 1895 and 1905 and home canning has always been a way of life in Maine. Anyhow, since it was such a nice looking jar (aqua tint, no lid or bail...a couple of small chips on the inside of the mouth but other-wise in great shape...also says "Ball Ideal" on it) I decided to see what I could find on the internet and thus, came across your sight. To say the least your sight is very informative. Any idea what years the "Ball Ideal" jars were made?

It had the dirt basement etc. We cleaned it out the other day and found a number of ball jars from Ideal, perfect mason, one with just Ball on it and one with 1903 patent date. There are a number of other types of jars, bottles and jugs along with other interesting items. We are wondering of interest. Drop a line.

Such a nice site. I always appreciate collectors who do this, as it helps us  neophyte collectors/sellers/etc. I have a "sperm jar" like the one you show...at least I think it is, the photo was a little hard to make out. It's about 9 1/4" high counting the zinc lid, is a blue/aqua color, has bubbles in it, the bottom has a #2, and on the side it says BALL no other words. The  word BALL has a 5th connected letter. It looks like the other Ls, but it's tilted towards the right about 45 degrees. It does look like a sperm. Can you tell me what are they worth?

Thanks so much, Janna

Bruce, In going thru my mothers house, we found several hundred ball jars of various sizes, shapes, and colors full of old fruit and jellies.. Hi, Bruce!

Today while my sister and I were going through our recently deceased mother's house in  preparation for putting it up for sale, we came across a Ball jar in the rafters in the basement. The jar is blue in tint. It has "IDEAL" written under the word "Ball." Underneath "IDEAL" it has "PAT'D July 14, 1908." Is this the same jar that you show in your collection? What is its value?

I'll look forward to hearing from you.

Hi -
I came across your Ball Jar website when looking for the Ball Jar Company web site. I couldn't remember how to spell the actual company. I found the jars interesting, in fact have always found them interesting when I've come across them at auctions. I used to sell antiques in a variety of shops around our area, but have discontinued it because my time is taken up with other things and I couldn't do it as it should be done.

What this is leading to is that I have a lot of antique items in storage that occasionally appear on eBay. I have a bunch of Ball Jars. Now that I have found you, I will, over time, go through them to see if I have any that you are seeking. Don't hold your breath on this, my schedule is a bit hectic. Also, I was wondering if you would want other older ones you already have for trading with other people. Just a thought.

About your photos - I've done quite a bit of photography in my time and have been working with digital for a number of years now. Actually, your photos are fairly good, but I have a few suggestions. First, choose a good, plain background. Your best ones did have a plain background. Second, use diffused light rather than direct light, it will cut down on glare. Also, you might want to try a dulling spray. They use it in the movies to make sure bright objects, such as chrome doesn't shine too bright on the film. I'm not sure where you would find it, perhaps you could find a local production company, such as someone who films commercials.

That's all for now. Sandy

Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks!

Hi!

This isn't really a comment. It's actually a question. My husband and I were enjoying learning the colors and we decided to write and ask you if you were interested in a Balll Mason. We also believe that it may be a special because its marked on the bottom, it is either capital i 9 or 6 capital i. Sorry about the way I had to write that the font made it hard to tell. The book we have (Collectors Guide to Ball Jars) says its the first special order that Ball made for Hahne & Co. Newark NJ. The jar is Ball Blue in color.

Thanks for any information you might have or any leads you may know on who might want the jar.

Hi!

Just checking out your Ball Jar collection...very nice I might add! I found some Ball Jars today! In your photos, you mentioned Ideal being in a very large slug plate...what is it you mean by this, as I don't see anything different on it. I found two Ideal jars today. Quart and pint in clear glass! Also two ball perfect mason jars in blue.

Problem being and this is my question, the ideal jars have bails off course, but the others that had screw on lids, have no lids. How much does this affect the value? Also...what are jars like these worth? Approx. I know you have to love them to want to buy them, but maybe a rough idea on a value? I was curious to see if I got a good deal!

Thanks! Sandi

Greetings,

You have a fantastic website on the Ball fruit jars. I have been collecting for several years now, most of my jars are dug up or bought in groups at country auctions. I aggressively seek out old farm trash pits to dig. Some of the best jars come back to life from them. Could you help me evaluate some I have that are not listed in the Redbooks? Is there a better guide for Ball jars out there? I have some trouble with the color names, for instance what's the difference between yellow green and apple green. Or another ,forest true green and just green. Would there be a color chart published somewhere? Please let me know if you are interested in seeing good photos of some of my jars, to evaluate from.

Sincerely w/thanks for a great site Jeff Smedbron

I was visiting your Web page, (which I truly enjoyed) and noticed that you had information on the date 1886, I have a bottle marked 1886, by E B & CO. Ld. I would like to send a picture of it for you to examine, if you wouldn't mind the inconvenience.
