Adamstown 2002

Well, I didn't get to go to Shupp's Grove last year due to a conflict in my schedule but this year was different. Except for 2005, I have always made it to that show as well as it's former incarnation @ York, PA because of the out-door flea market style concept of the show.

With all of the crazy construction going on all the way down Rte 222 for the last (5) years, the drive can be long and painful depending on what time of the day you're traveling.

This year my wife decided for us well ahead of time, that this year we were going to stay overnight. She was in No mood to get up @2:30 AM & drive 3+ hours in the wee pre-dawn hours of the morning. This did however allow me to be up nice & early & get to the show as it opened to the public.

I'm kind of glad I did this, this year now because the Show was basically a terrible "Wash Out." There was a horrendous downpour around 9:15 AM and it stopped around 10:00 AM or so. It was drizzly afterwards and it rained off & on for the next few hours and then around Noon it started to rain steady again and continued heavy the
entire rest of the day. What a shame to say the least! A lot of Dealers obviously had paper items damaged and everything was very wet. Tables were covered in plastic tarps and bottles & jars were all soak & wet. I saw many dealers grumbling & packing early to leave. Some buyers after taking cover left too when the rain subsided. It was an all around disappointment I think for most.

But with all of those negatives there were some positives too. I still got to see many old friends & acquaintances and chatted for awhile with them all. I also spoke with many vendors I didn't know & had a good time looking at their sales tables. Plus I took many nice photos of valuable jars. I also managed to pick up two decent Ball jars to add to the collection as well as an unusual Laser Color photo of a 20 Series BPM dated 1983. And since I arrived early, then ate breakfast between 9AM - 10 AM and left by Noon, I basically missed most of the really bad rainfall.

As always, I took some photos so everyone could enjoy and appreciate what it is like there. It was early in the AM, & as previously mentioned, cloudy, rainy etc. Take a close look though @ some of the jars I managed to snag in the photos. According to the (1) owner, the cobalt jar in his hand was worth $17K! I also took a photo of a 7.5k deep olive green lightning pint.

There was a beautifully colored Balll Mason pint that I wanted very badly but @$650 I just admired it from a distance. There was also a super citron midget improved closure 1858 with a nice BBGMCo milk glass lid but alas @$4,200 it was way out of my league.

All in all though, I had a thoroughly good time & I'm not sorry I went despite the weather.  Bruce Wayne
